Pier Pander

Frisian sculptor Pier Pander (1864-1919) was a celebrated artist in Rome. Pander is a representative of 19th century Academic Art, that was influenced by the French Académie des Beaux-Arts. Another Frisian member of this style is Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema, a painter of special British denizenship.
In the Netherlands Pander is most famous for his portrait of Queen Wilhelmina (1880-1962), which was depicted on the Dutch currency of the day. Pander received this commission in honour of  Wilhelmina’s inauguration in 1898, as recognition of his status.

What’s on

The exhibition in the museum is about Pander’s life, career and work. It was the first museum in the Netherlands (1954) that was dedicated to one single artist.
The temple was especially designed by Pander to house his life’s work: five marble statues that represent his idea of how an artist creates art.

History

Construction of this leaning, curved and unfinished tower began in 1529. The original plan was to  attach a new church to the tower,  as a replacement of the old dilapidated Saint Vitus Church. The site of this former church is now indicated by small fountains.
However, the plan was never realised because master builder Jacob van Aken was unlucky: right from the start the tower began to sink in the soft Frisian clay.
