The current COVID lockdown prevents us from showing visitors how beautiful our town is. So we invited HCL-city guide Henk Oly to take you on a virtual tour. He will give you an impression of historic Leeuwarden, the capital of the province of Fryslân.

Did you know that until some two hundred years ago, Leeuwarden was one of the most prosperous towns in the Netherlands? Its population grew from 5,000 inhabitants in 1500 to 20,000 in 1800. This tour informs you about the following monuments:

• Oldehove – leaning tower and symbol of Leeuwarden
• Chancellery – representative seat of Habsburg king Charles V for government and law
• Jacobijner or Grote Kerk – former chapel of medieval monastery transformed into protestant church and crypt of Frisian Nassau stadtholders
• Weigh House – centre of trade in dairy products
• Princessehof – palace of dowager princess, from whom our Dutch royals Van Oranje Nassau (and the majority of other European royalty) decent
• Boshuisen Gasthuis – courtyard with alms houses for poor women
• Nieuwe Stads Weeshuis – city orphanage
• Townhall – in Baroque Classicism style
